- "It was horrible being a rat with human intelligence. Do you know what that means? It means that every time I was forced to eat a piece of putrifying flesh, my human brain was revolted. Every single day, the rat's need to survive made me do things my human brain found humiliating. Degrading. Gross."
- ―David to Rachel[src]
The rat is a long-tailed rodent native to Earth. A white rat morph was acquired by Cassie, Rachel, and David, with David being trapped in rat morph.
Acquiring
In The Secret, around 1997, Cassie and Rachel acquired Courtney, a white rat that Cassie was using for a science project.[1] Many months later, Jake brought a white rat to David so that David could acquire it.[2] In 2000,[note 1] some morph-capable human-Controllers had acquired rats.[3]
Usage
- "Anyway, I'm the one who morphed a rat and went down into the dirt with David. The one who bit off her own tail to catch him in our makeshift trap. It was a dirty job. Somebody had had to do it and, as usual, I'd been the one. I'd been the only one with the stomach to stay with David for the full two hours it took for him to lose everything. To cease to be human. To become a rat. Permanently."
- ―Rachel[src]
While in junior high school, Cassie had an extra-credit science project where she attempted to have Courtney, a white rat, make her way through a maze. When Courtney failed to move through the maze, Cassie and Rachel remained in the classroom after school and Rachel recommended morphing into Courtney. Cassie and Rachel proceeded to acquire and morph into Courtney. In rat morph, the pair made their way to the maze, where Cassie realized that the ceiling fan was blowing the scent of the seeds and nuts away, preventing Courtney from navigating through the maze. Just then, two boys entered into the classroom and tried to kill the three rats, and Cassie and Rachel ran up their pant legs to get them to stop.[1]
Months later, when the Animorphs were betrayed by their newest member David, Cassie hatched a plan to defeat David by trapping him in morph. Deciding to trap him in a rat morph, the Animorphs held a meeting at the barn, knowing that David was eavesdropping, where they discussed how Cassie and Rachel had morphed into rats to hide the pieces of the morphing cube. David then demanded that Rachel help him retrieve the box, and David and Rachel morphed into white rats to navigate the underground pipes at the abandoned construction site. David realized he was being tricked and attacked Rachel, who defended herself. David then bit into Rachel's rat tail to drag her back, prompting Rachel to bite through her own tail. David was then trapped in a cage while Rachel demorphed, and David was forced to remain in the small cage, with no room to demorph, until the two-hour time limit had passed. Once David had been trapped in the body of an injured white rat, Rachel and Ax transported David to a rock in the middle of the ocean, where other wild rats lived, and abandoned him there.[4]
Over two years later, David was rescued from the rock by Crayak and Drode, where he forced Rachel to morph into the rat in an attempt to trap her in morph. However, before the time limit was up, Rachel realized that David could not act on his threats and demorphed.[5] Shortly after, when the Yeerk Empire acquired the morphing cube, a handful of morph-capable Controllers used rat morphs.[3]

Notes
- ↑ Books #44-53, plus the pre-time skip section of #54, are set in 2000. This is because it is January 2000 in #44: The Unexpected and in #53: The Answer, Jake says that they had been fighting for three years; the Animorphs met Elfangor in 1997, which therefore puts the end of the war in 2000.
