A wild squirrel
- "Our morphs were like the squirrels scampering around your backyard right now. Gray, brown, and white fur. Long, twitchy bushy tail. Big, twitchy dark brown eyes. More energy than a hyperactive kid after a dozen cups of coffee. Between the five of us we were jerking our heads, looking in every possible direction, about nine times a second."
- ―Marco[src]
A squirrel is a rodent native to Earth and was acquired by Cassie, Jake, Rachel, Marco and Ax.
Acquiring
In The Message, set in 1997,[1] Cassie acquired Magilla, a gray squirrel who was a patient at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic.[2] Two years later, in 1999,[3] Jake, Rachel, Marco and Ax acquired squirrel morphs in The Proposal.[4]
Usage
- "I had morphed the squirrel before, of course. I knew what to expect. The body was wonderful. The senses keen and sharp. But the mind lived in a state of perpetual terror, always looking for predators. The only other emotion was hunger. But I could control the squirrel's fear... if I could control my own."
- ―Cassie[src]
In 1997,[1] Cassie discovered that some of the birds at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic were being killed by a wild animal. Unable to sleep due to weird dreams she was having, she left her house at night and went into her barn, where she acquired a squirrel patient named Magilla. Cassie then morphed into Magilla the squirrel when a red-tailed hawk swooped in. A fox then appeared, and Cassie realized that the fox was responsible for killing the birds. As the fox chased her, Cassie cried out for help, and the hawk, none other than Tobias, helped her, although he admonished her for her actions as he had nearly eaten her.[2]
Months later, Cassie morphed into a squirrel again while running from the Veleek.[5] Later that year, Cassie was at the bathroom of a TV studio when Rachel began birthing a wild crocodile from her back. Panicking, Cassie morphed into a squirrel and was nearly killed by the crocodile, although she was able to avoid being killed or eaten.[6]
Two years later, in 1999,[3] the Animorphs decided to break into the house of William Roger Tennant. Jake, Rachel, Marco and Ax acquired wild squirrels and morphed into them, while Cassie morphed into Magilla. Jake held a two-inch Swiss Army Knife in his squirrel teeth as the Animorphs made their way to one of Tennant's windows, where Jake then used his squirrel hands to successfully use the knife to cut through the window net, allowing the Animorphs to enter Tennant's house.[4]
