For Cassie's mother in the TV series, see Aisha

"Let's face it, Cassie works so hard already, what can you do? You can't give her punishment work or make her stay in her room."
"We have a very cool kid."
"Yes, we do have a cool kid. But on those rare occasions when she screws up the only way to really discipline her is to embarrass her."
―Michelle and Walter[src]

Michelle is Cassie's mother and the head veterinarian at The Gardens.

Biography

Career and Family Life

"Cassie's mom is a vet, too, but she works at The Gardens. That's this huge amusement park that also has a zoo — or I guess they call it a wildlife park."
Jake[src]

Michelle is a scientist who works at The Gardens as the head veterinarian[3] and the head of medical services at the park.[2] She married a man named Walter and lived with him on a farm[4] in California.[5] In 1984,[note 1] Michelle gave birth to their daughter, Cassie.[3] In the late 1990s, she met Jake, a friend of Cassie's from school whom Cassie had a crush on. In 1996,[6] Jake came over to their house for Thanksgiving, and Michelle grew fond of Jake,[2] whom she found to be very cute.[7] During an attempt to rescue a skunk, Walter was sprayed several times; due to the immense smell, Michelle forced Walter out of the house, causing Walter to sleep in a tent in the yard, which Michelle later had burned.[8] At some point when Cassie was a teenager, Michelle gave her a talk about sex.[9]

Worried for Cassie

"Where. Were. You. Young. Lady?"
"I was just with Rachel. And Jake."
"You know we have discussed your dating, and I thought we decided you were still too young."
"Dating?"
"Maybe it's time for us to have another talk about the birds and the bees."

On a Monday night in 1997,[note 2] Michelle was preparing dinner at home when she began to worry since Cassie was not there. Checking the farm, she noted that the horses were still in their stables, exacerbating her worry. She then picked up the house phone when Jake called looking for Cassie and informed him that Cassie was not at home and that she had missed dinner. Jake then told her not to worry and that he would look for her, and Michelle replied that she believed Cassie was fine.[3] Months later, on a Saturday night, Michelle was at home when she noticed that one of Cassie's favorite shows was on. Heading outside, she leaned against the doorframe and asked Cassie if she wanted her to tape her show. Cassie replied that she was outside with Jake and Marco, whom Michelle then greeted before telling Cassie that it was getting late as it was almost 9 P.M.[10] Very shortly after, Michelle was at home when Cassie showed up with "Jake," who was actually Ax in Jake morph. Hearing Jake's voice, Michelle went out to greet him with a hug and asked Jake if he was staying for Walter's "Chili of Doom." Cassie stated that Jake had already eaten, to which Michelle looked to Walter and stated that it was precious how Cassie was trying to protect Jake. At the dinner table, Michelle was surprised when Jake ravenously ate the hot chili, which prompted her to state that Jake was insane. She then asked Jake about school, and when he asked her about her work, she told him that The Gardens were having some camel babies. After dinner, the family gathered around the television, and Michelle began to fall asleep. She noticed Jake leaving, and remarked that he was still so cute as he left.[7]

Not too long after, on a Friday, Michelle was home when Walter notified her that he had to rescue a burned skunk off the side of the highway. Michelle went into the basement pantry and retrieved a six-pack of V8 as Cassie arrived home. Walter wanted Cassie's help to retrieve the skunk due to his past trauma, which Cassie tried to get Michelle to do claiming she had homework, which Michelle denied in retort. Michelle giggled as Walter recalled his previous skunk incident and having to sleep in a tent while Michelle remembered having to burn the tent.[8]

Tiger Call

"Wait a minute, I know this tiger. He's one of ours. He's from The Gardens. No one alerted me there'd been an escape! Okay, now squeeze the bag a couple of times to get the blood flow started. I'm going to close that wound right here and now. He won't make it otherwise."

Andalite-Yeerk War

"If a group of Hork-Bajir spend any prolonged time in those conditions, they could easily die."
"That's right, Mom. The Hork-Bajir could die. Every single one of us, human and Hork-Bajir and Andalite, could die. Any day. At any time. I still don't get your point."
"Cassie! How can you say that? We're talking about lives."

After the Yeerk Empire discovered that Animorphs were in fact humans and not Andalite bandits, the Animorphs had to evacuate their families. Michelle and Walter were the first to be told about the war and relocated to the Hork-Bajir valley.[4] She and Walter were both extremely interested in studying Ax's and the Hork-Bajirs' physiology.

Personality

"Suddenly, unexpectedly, I was angry. Mad that my mother, a scientist, wouldn't — or couldn't — face the awful truth. That we were at war. That the rules had changed. That we had to do things we'd never choose to do under peacetime circumstances. That we didn't have that luxury. That every single minute of every single day we had to make sacrifices we'd rather not make. And I was angry that my mother was forcing me to confront her with this truth."

Notes

  1. The Andalite Chronicles takes place in 1976 and states it is 21 years before Elfangor met the Animorphs, meaning the Animorphs met Elfangor in 1997. In #53: The Answer, Jake states they were 13 when they met Elfangor, placing their year of birth as 1984.
  2. The Andalite Chronicles explicitly states that it is set 21 years before Elfangor met the Animorphs and 10 years after the Yeerk exodus, which The Hork-Bajir Chronicles explicitly reveals to be in 1966. This sets The Andalite Chronicles in 1976, which then places the events of #1: The Invasion in 1997.
